2024 NAPLAN

2024 - National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment that allows parents to see how their child is progressing against national standards in literacy and numeracy and over time. NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four areas (or ‘domains’) of: reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar, and punctuation), and numeracy.

NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process, they do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance. Your child’s teacher will have the best insight into your child’s educational progress.

Schools have transitioned from paper-based to online assessments (except for Year 3 Writing). NAPLAN Online provides better assessment, more precise results, and a faster turnaround of information. NAPLAN Online is a tailored test that adapts to student responses, presenting students with questions that may be more or less difficult – resulting in better assessment and more precise results.

NAPLAN testing will occur at Kandos High School between 13th - 18th March 2024 (Term 1, Week 7- 8). Catch-up tests will be organised on an individual basis in the event of student absences up until 25 March 2024.

The website www.nap.edu.au has a wealth of information about NAPLAN Online as well as a public demonstration site where you can see for yourself what kinds of questions will be asked for each year level as well as the format of the tests. There is also a frequently asked questions section and information regarding tailored testing which is a feature of NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN is for everyone. Kandos High School supports inclusive testing, so all students have the opportunity to participate in the national assessment program. Adjustments are available for students with disability who have diverse functional abilities and needs.

If you wish to withdraw your child from participating in NAPLAN you are required to complete a Parent Consent for Exemption or Withdrawal Form prior to the commencement of testing. This form can be obtained from the school office. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the NAPLAN Coordinator, Nikki O’Brien, via the school office on 02 6379 4103 or email nikki.obrien1@det.nsw.edu.au.
