Self-Select Class
Applications for the 2026 Stage 4 Self-Select Class have now closed.
A Personalised learning environment
At Kandos High School, we understand that students learn in different ways and at different paces. Our Self-Select Class is designed to provide a calm, structured and supportive environment where students can take ownership of their learning while receiving guidance tailored to their individual needs.
The Self-Select Class offers students the opportunity to work in a smaller, quieter setting that reduces distractions and allows for more personalised attention. In this class, students can progress through tasks at a pace that suits their learning style, build strong study habits and strengthen their confidence across subjects.
Teachers work closely with each student to set goals, monitor progress and provide targeted support. This includes one-on-one assistance, small-group instruction and access to learning resources that help students stay organised, stay on track and experience success in their classes.
Designed for students who benefit from extra structure
Some students need more time, structure or individualised support to complete their classwork. Others benefit from the predictability and focused learning space that the Self-Select Class provides. This class is designed to help students who may:
- Feel overwhelmed in larger or noisier classrooms
- Need structured routines to stay engaged
- Benefit from additional check-ins or targeted teaching
- Require more guided practice to build confidence
- Prefer working in a setting that allows for calm, uninterrupted learning
High expectations with strong support
The Self-Select Class maintains the same curriculum expectations as mainstream classes, with the added benefit of personalised guidance. Teachers help students break down tasks, manage their workload and develop essential skills such as:
- Time management
- Organisation
- Self-monitoring
- Resilience
- Responsible decision-making
- Independence in learning
This balanced approach ensures students are challenged academically while feeling supported every step of the way.
A Strength of Our Small School
As a small school, we know our students exceptionally well. This means we can identify learning needs early, adjust support quickly and build strong relationships that help students feel safe, valued and understood. The Self-Select Class is an example of how Kandos High School uses its size as an advantage, creating personalised programs that make a real difference in student learning and wellbeing.
Preparing Students for Success
The Self-Select Class is not just a space for academic support, it is a place where students learn how to be independent, motivated and confident learners. They gain the skills they need to thrive in mainstream classes, pursue future pathways and take greater ownership of their education.
At Kandos High School, the Self-Select Class is part of our commitment to ensuring every student is known, valued and supported. It reflects our belief that with the right environment and guidance, every student can grow, succeed and reach their potential
