NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

Is your child in Year 9 to 12 curious about their career choices? Now they can use LifeLauncher, a free online tool to explore and simplify their career choices.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Encourage your child to jump online and complete the 5-minute personality and subject quizzes to be matched to a range of career options that suit their passions and strengths.

If they take both quizzes, they’ll get more refined suggestions. They can even create free online pinboards to shortlist the courses and jobs that interest them.

When your child creates an account, they can save their searches and build a real understanding of the opportunities and pathways open to them.

What can your child learn about their career options?

Your child can explore the weekly salary of the career options they’re interested in. They’ll also find the employment and growth rates of those careers and the number of workers currently in those fields in Australia.

Each career option shows them the education they need as well as other related careers. They can follow links to other sites to find out more about a course to help them find the best provider for them.

Launch into the future today

Use this tool to chat with your child about their post-school options in a meaningful way.

Inspire your child to find their career match today at LifeLauncher.nsw.gov.au.

Agriculture students attended the Singleton Cattle Education day, sponsored by Glencore.

Students attended a range of workshops on junior judging, how to select cattle for breeding and careers in the beef cattle industry.

Kandos High School was extremely lucky and won a stud Angus heifer to commence their school breeding program. As part of the 'Win a Heifer Competition', Mrs White had to write a letter outlining why our agriculture students would like to win this heifer.

Three students Molly Best, Miah Currie and Brooke Howe, were then interviewed on the day by a panel of judges.

These girls spoke extremely well and should be proud of their efforts of winning our school a stud heifer.

Congratulations!!

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

Students from Banksia accompanied by Mr Nassis and Mrs Mundey, travelled to Centennial Coal Charbon Mine on 6 March 2019 as part of their HSIE subject 'The History of Kandos'.

The excursion included a powerpoint presentation by Mr Greg Mundey on the history of Charbon Coal Mine, which also covered the commencement of mining in the area dating back to the 1920s, to the start of the existing Charbon Mine in the 1950s, through to the underground mine closure in 2014, open cut mine closure in 2015 and currently 'Charbon Mine Site Rehabilitation Project'.

The excursion also included a site tour which saw us viewing the old redundant bathhouse, closed entrances to the underground mine, the open cut mine and the 'history in the making' of the mine site rehabilitation, including the earthworks process of reinstating the site back to its original state pre-mining activities. This included inspecting areas at different stages of rehabilitation dating back to the early 2000s, to the recently completed areas during 2018.

Another stop on tour included an inspection of the Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Scar Tree site, that is protected and enclosed to preserve the site.

To finalise our day, the students were able to inspect the Train Loading Tunnel Facility, where the coal was loaded onto trains ready for export overseas when the mine was operational.

A few students were also lucky enough to find some fossils.

Thank you to Centennial Coal, who also provided a delicious morning tea.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Bullying - No Way Day

Kandos High School celebrated the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. Students participated in a range of activities that included: writing positive messages that promote anti-bullying actions, a cake stall, anti-bullying photo booth and the creation of a giant NO in the playground.

In addition, students participated in 'mini' lesson during their timetabled classes where students developed their knowledge and understanding of bullying.

We encourage you to take the time to reinforce these concepts at home.

The national definition of bullying for Australian schools says:

Bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group of misusing their power over one or more persons. Bullying can happen in person or online, and it can be obvious or hidden.

Bullying of any form or for any reason can have long term effects on those involved, including bystanders.

Single incidents and conflict of rights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.

There are four types of bullying behaviour:

Verbal bullying which includes name calling or insulting someone about physical characteristics such as their weight or height, or other attributes including race, sexuality, culture or religion

Physical bullying which includes hitting or otherwise hurting someone, showing or intimidating another person, or damaging or stealing their belongings

Social bullying which includes consistently excluding another person or sharing information or images that will have a harmful effect on the other person

Online bullying carried out through the internet or mobile devices. Online bullying is also sometimes call cyberbullying.

Signs and symptoms

Being bullied:

Unspecified headaches, stomach aches (frequent requests to stay at home)

Outbursts of anger

Unexplained cuts and bruises, torn and mud splattered clothing

Hitting out, flinching

Tiredness ( often linked to sleep disturbance)

Loss of appetite

Unexplained crying

Unwillingness to walk or travel to school alone

Avoidance of students once called as 'friends'

Staying at home on evenings and at weekends

Stealing money

Staying late at school (to avoid encounters with students outside of school)

Becoming introverted, sullen and self-effacing

Expressing self-doubt

Greater uneasiness with expressing physical affection

Becoming easily distracted, forgetful (an indication that they are preoccupied with something else)

Bullying others:

Changes in friendship groups (particularly the loss of a friendship group)

An unexplained but overall decline in grades

Expressions of disaffection with school

Desire to show off, especially in front of others

Ownership of items or goods that could not have been bought without parental knowledge

Expessed anger or irritation with fellow students (including making disparaging comments about them or threating to hit them)

Frustration with homework

Domination or subjugation of siblings.

It is important that students become comfortable to report any bullying behavious to their teacher. We need to ensure that we provide a safe and positive learning environment to all students.

Guidelines for Privileges for Consistent Wearing of Uniform

At Kandos High School, we would like to see our students in school uniform each day and wearing it with pride. Studies have shown that when students dress in uniform they are more likely to come to school with a positive learning attitude and feel more a part of the school. Wearing uniform gives a sense of belonging and inclusiveness. It also increases the student's personal safety by allowing them to be more easily recognised.

Privileges

Sudents will be rewarded for consistently coming to school in full uniform each day. These rewards/privileges will include but will not be restricted to:

- End of Term Disco - attendance at and/or receiving a discount of anywhere between 50-100% on the entry cost.

- End of year Privilege Excursion - students may be invited to participate in this highly valued excursion.

- Merit Awards - students would be given these for consistency and the merits go towards higher awards.

How this will work

- In Weeks 5 and 10 of each term, any student who has 100% uniform during that monitoring period will received a merit certificate.

- To qualify for the privileges, students must stay above 90% for the monitoring period by wearing full school uniform.

- Students out of uniform must see Miss Heilman and get an 'out of uniform' note before school each day. Students will be required to produce this note for any teacher who asks for it during the day. The issue of these notes will be recorded.

- Students often out of uniform without an explanation from home may not qualify for privileges.

What is our uniform?

Students at KHS have the privilege of wearing two distinct types of uniform:

Full dress uniform, to be worn on excursions, school photo day, formal assemblies and other occasions when notified.

- KHS school shirt

- Grey school trousers (boys) OR navy school slacks (girls) OR navy skirt (girls)

- Plain navy blue shorts or track pants (small white insignia is acceptable)

- Navy blue stockings or tights with skirts (girls)

- Joggers or black school shoes

- School jumper or school blazer.

Everyday uniform, full dress uniform, with the additional items listed below:

- Western Area or NSW Combined High Schools Representative shirt

- KHS Rep shirt (sport, SRC, etc), NAIDOC week shirt

- Western Area or NSW Combined High Schools representative jacket or track top.

Footwear in may practical subjects (Science, all Industrial Technologies, Food Technology, Hospitality, PDHPE) must be safe in order to protect students and avoid injury. (School Uniforms in NSW Government Schools) DoE School Uniform Policy 1.3.

N.B. DEFINITE NO:

- Footless tights or leggings (unless worn with a navy blue skirt)

- jeans

- shorts or skirts that end higher than half way up your thigh

- clothes of different colours or patterns or insignias/logos/stripes (especially brightly coloured)

- leather shoes of different colours, steel-capped boots (unless for specific purposes) and footwear that does not support or protect the foot or ankle (thongs or sandals)

- clothes or bags advertising inappropriate products such as alcohol or have inappropriate language on them.

The Breakfast Club was established in 2016 and provides breakfast for kids who may not get the chance to eat before coming to school, as well as providing support and resources to help them prepare for their day.

The program is run in conjunction with an exercise program run by the school's Welfare Officer that promotes healthy eating and lifestyle choices.

The funds provided by IGA are a huge boost for the Breakfast Club and will see it's continued success into the future.

Kandos Connective Educational Garden

Student learning at Kandos High and Public Schools has been enhanced by a new garden with a focus on environmental, sustainability and cultural education.

Funded by a KEPCO grant to the school, Skillset Environment Land Works were engaged to design the landscape and manage the project logistics and construction on the Kandos Connective Educational Garden.

Skillset's Land Works Coordinator, Landscape Architect, Ecologist and ex Kandos High student, Thomas Staff, designed the garden to be a physical barrier between the two schools that looks and acts like a connected holistic landscape. An educational walk through has 12 stops which students can engage with interactive signage via an iPad or smart phone. Each stop has a variety of information and illustrations describing various educational content. Functionally the garden has several usable spaces including an indigenous yarning circle outdoor classroom, synthetic lawn with shade cloth, raised sensory garden bed, eco-shelter that functions as a study pod, stage and shaded area, and eight grass squares that students can relax on. The garden's main features will be aesthetically pleasing, adding colour and texture to a concrete dominated landscape.

The garden features 12 key educational stops that relate directly to local ecology, sustainable living, and indigenous heritage.

As part of the holistic approach to the project and demonstrating their commitment to sustainable communities through both environment and employment outcomes, Land Works employed and trained three Year 11 KHS students to help complete the landscape preparation and garden construction. This opportunity provided the students with valuable training, experience and skills they can use in their future careers. All three received WHS certificates after completing Land Works training and have been advised the Land Works would like to employ them for future local projects. They expressed their pride in helping build such a wonderful garden in their school. T

he project has engaged with more than 30 students to help build or guide the educational content within the garden, The school in planning to encourage neighbouring schools to use their educational landscapes.

Our school has also engaged Skillset Environment Land Works to run two educational workshops with students to develop the content for the 12 educational signs.

We would like to thank KEPCO for the generous Community grant, and thank you to everyone who attended the official opening of the garden.

In Term 3 2016, Kandos High School was selected to hold the local final for the Legacy Junior Public Speaking competition.

Two of our Year 7 students entered as contestants. Charlotte Hoetink gave a prepared speech on climate Change, and Raynor Pirece gave her speech on Gender Equality. Both girls then had to give an impromptu speech on 'Inside or Outside'.

The event wouldn't have been possible without student volunteers. Bethany Vidler made an excellent chairperson, with Jasmine Kernaghan at her side as timekeeper. Hannah Doyle and Ava Vidler served as ushers, making sure the visitors to our school could find their way.

All students who took part were able to watch some excellent speakers and hear great advice from our adjudicator, Lin Eccleston.

As I seek to grow the Public Speaking and Debating program at KHS, I am happy to see I have such passionate, enthusiastic and talented speakers to work with.

Well done to those students.

SMS Attendance Alerts

Kandos High School has recently invested in a software system called Millennium that will allow us to continue to improve the support for your child's education and keep you informed of their progress at school.

As I am sure you are aware, attendance at school is a vital part of student's maximising their learning at school. To help ensure that school records are correct and to keep you informed when your child is not at school, a SMS system is being implemented in Millennium for attendance.

When your child is not recorded as being at school you will receive an SMS similar to : "Records show that student name is absent today. Please reply to this message to explain the reason for this absence. Please include student's full name in reply messages."

This message will be sent if your child is not at school, is late or has been incorrectly marked absent. If you receive this message you may reply with a text message outlining the reason your child is absent from school or advising that you believe your child is at school, this will allow us to immediately check our attendance records for your child and ensure they are accurate.

If you wish to, you may continue to contact the school directly or send a note explaining any absence when your child returns to school. If an SMS is sent to the school outlining the reason for your child's absence, then a written note is no longer required.

The SMS absentee system will only function for parents with an accurate mobile phone number in our system. It is important that you ensure the school has your current mobile phone number .

Reminder: please remember to include your child's full name in any reply SMS, this allows the system to accurately match the SMS reply to your child and assists the office staff to process your replies.

As with any new system, there may be problems initially, so we would appreciated your patience and most importantly, your feedback about the new system.

"Learning how to learn is teaching oneself" Max Woods

Students in Years 11 and 12 were introduced to the concept of ALARM, which is an acronym for A Learning and Responding Matrix. This model was designed by school teacher Max Woods, as a tool to teach students how to learn, thus empowering them to become critical thinkers.

The ALARM matrix works by asking a series of questions which can be applied to all curriculum areas as well as assisting with personal decision making.

Our students participated in an in-depth analysis of social media in an engaging and informative 50 minute session delivered by Miss Steinbeck and assisted by Mrs Brown.

Congratulations to Jade Botham-Barnes for her selection and completions of the Dobell Drawing School Scholarship at the National Art School During the last school holidays.

The Dobell Drawing School offers 75, year 11 students from government schools, to work in a tertiary environment wit practicing artists and lecturers.

Jade has written about her time at the art school.

"In the school holidays, I was lucky enough to attend the National Arts School in Sydney". the program I attended was he Dobell Drawing Program for regional students. At the Art Camp, I participated in Experimental Drawing which included painting objects and the Nude. The materials I used throughout the week were inks applied with sticks, paints and different types of charcoal. I attended classes throughout the week and had my own studio space. We went on an excursion to the Art Gallery of NSW, which was fantastic! At the end of the week we had our own exhibition which showcased our best work. I found this experience educational challenging and rewarding and made some amazing friends. I'm very grateful for having this experience and I'm very grateful for everyone who helped make his happen."

The 2016 KHS Chess tournament is under way.

Thirteen students from year 8 to year 12 are 'battling it out' over the chessboard in a 'Rapid' double-round robin to determine who will receive top honours and of course the bragging rights which come with the winner's trophy.

The games thus far have been a mixed affair with some missed opportunities and blunders; whilst others have been interesting strategic encounters with play being cautious and measured with a few notable exceptions where positions have been blown wide open with some solid tactics.

So far it has been a lot of fun with great sportsmanship from all the participants, alongside some excellent kibitzing which has lead to some serious post-mortem analysis and a great deal of laughter.

Look out for updates, including a diagram or two from some recorded games, once chess notation has been fully mastered by the players!

SRC Fundraising Success

Every year hundreds and thousands of communities, often with no warning, lose their homes, their possessions and their livelihoods because of natural or man-made disasters. Every day they are faced with a battle for survival.

Last year, the KHS SRC co-ordinated a fundraising campaign to support the victims of the earthquake in Nepal and the hurricane in Vanuatu. The students decided that, rather than just donating money to an organisation, they wanted to use the funds to purchases items in need. The concept of Shelter Boxes were discussed and decided upon.

A Shelter Box is a large plastic lidded container, containing a range of items that will provide vital supplies to support communities around the world overwhelmed by disaster and humanitarian crisis. The items supply an extended family with a tent and essential equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless. In addition to the tent, the boxes contain a range of their survival equipment including thermal blankets and insulated ground sheets, mosquito nets, water carrying bag and a lifesaving water purification system, multi-fuel burning stove, pots, utensils, bowls and mugs as well as some school items.

On Thursday 31 March, the SRC hosed Peter and Lorraine Croft from the Dubbo Macquarie Rotary Club at our morning assembly. The Crofts are an integral part of the Shelter Box Australia Team who co-ordinate the purchase and distribution of Shelter Boxes throughout the world. They displayed the contents of the boxes and explained to students the purpose behind each item, it's uses and relevance to families. The Crofts also passed on their congratulations to the students and staff of KHS for their amazing abilities to raise funds to purchase 2 Shelter Boxes. At $1000 a piece, they recognise the great efforts that were made to accomplish such an achievement.

If anyone would like to know more about Shelter Box, make a donation to their cause or purchase one themselves we encourage you to go to the website at http://www.shelterboxaustraila.com.au/index.php and take a look.

Mangahigh - Mathematics 2016

This year the Mathematics department are trialling a new online Maths resource called Mangahigh. Similar to Mathletics, we think it is an excellent resource for high school students.

We will be using Mangahigh with your children at school and they can also use it to practice their maths at home.

Each student in year 7 to 10 has a login for the program, all it requires is an internet connection.

Mangahigh works just as well on tablets and smartphones as it does on computers.

We can't wait for our students to get exploring!

Web address: https://www.mangahigh.com/en-au/

The Tell Them From Me student feedback survey

I am delighted that this term, Kandos High School, like many others in the state, will participate in a Department of Education and Communities initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide our school with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school.

The following document will hopefully answer any questions that you may have Tell Them From Me FAQ (pdf 384 KB)

Nicole works to reach her "Max Potential"

Nicole Neilsen, a year 11 student of Kandos High school, has been involved in the 2012 "Max Potential Program" along with other year 11 students from Mudgee and Gulgong schools.

Max Potential is a youth leadership development program that connects community leaders with young aspiring leaders in their local area. The program is a simple, yet active, learning relationship that guides individuals on how to maximise their lives and leadership potential. Personal leadership coaching accelerates people's ability to lead themselves and others effectively. Through one-on-one focused chats, individuals develop their leadership capacity.

Nicole has been mentored by Mr Peter Druitt from Rylstone who has provided 1:1 support to her, guiding the planning and implementation of her personal project , co-managing the school's website. To help her achieve this Nicole has called on staff of the Kandos High School to supply photographs of activities undertaken in various classes and other school functions (eg disco, sports carnival etc). During this process Nicole has collected over 300 photographs which she has had to sort through, label and establish their availability for the website. It has been a quality learning process, allowing Nicole to understand the wider issues relating to website use and management, as well as hopefully expanding the usage rate of the school's website.
